The Okinawan Sanshin Player and Vocalist Aragaki Mutsumi created a beguiling experience for our first SAMA Session at WOMEX in Porto. She is a grand pupil of Okinawan music masters Choki Fukuhara and Kyoko Fukuhara so she has a deep virtuosic lineage to draw on, but her ability to trans-mutate that lineage into a sound that speaks to the current experiences of Okinawans offered us a glimpse into a world we did not know.
