Menzuma

Menzuma.jpg

This group lead by Endris Hassen, of QWANQWA, is comprised of Amharic-speaking Muslims from the northern part of Ethiopia and performs Ethiopian Islamic Manzuma.

These musicians come from the region of Wello in the rift valley, just a handful of kilometers from where the fossil Lucie and others were discovered. The cultures of the Muslims and Christians coexist harmoniously in this area and even commonly intermarry, which is evident by looking at the names of people: are constructed as your given name, father,s name, paternal grandfather's name, and so on, it's common to see this intermarrying from generations back.

This smiley group of youngsters in this group sing in a mix of Amharic and Arabic praising Allah, and about the variety of prophets distinct to Ethiopia, and are a typical example of folks in Wollo who are accustomed to expressing their culture, history, love, and overall lives through poetry and music.

Oftentimes, Muslims will chew a ceremonial leaf, chat, to bring them to a higher spiritual place, and they will listen to the chants and chew their leaf together, through clapping and chanting.
