For the first time in Seattle, SAMA: Music + Art presents The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia at Town Hall Seattle’s Great Hall on Tuesday, November 17, 2026.

Described as “the sound of Ancient Armenia reinvented for the 21st century,” The Naghash Ensemble brings together the spiritual power of Armenian sacred music, the intimacy of folk tradition, and the bold language of contemporary composition. The ensemble was created by Armenian-American composer and pianist John Hodian, whose music sets the writings of the 15th-century Armenian poet and priest Mkrtich Naghash.

At the center of the performance are three extraordinary female vocalists, joined by duduk, oud, dhol, and piano. Together, they create a sound that is unmistakably Armenian yet difficult to place in any single category—part folk music, part chamber music, and at moments almost cinematic. The ensemble’s acclaimed “Songs of Exile” explores displacement, longing, spirituality, resilience, and the enduring connection to homeland. These themes are rooted deeply in Armenian history while speaking powerfully to communities around the world today.

The ensemble’s Seattle debut will be more than a concert. Before the performance, Armenian-American conductor, educator, and Armenian music scholar Tigran Arakelyan will present a special talk exploring the poetry, history, and cultural context behind the music.

Guests are also invited to gather and share a meal before the show. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian Armenian meals prepared by Hye Life Cafe & Bar will be available for purchase. Located in Bellevue, Hye Life is an Armenian-owned Eastern European and Mediterranean restaurant known for its warm neighborhood atmosphere and fresh comfort dishes.
