In Taiwan, different ethnic groups have come to live together and, at the same time, connect with the world through the ocean. And as we continue our recap from the Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2022, we're excited to share four talented indigenous musicians from the lovely island of Taiwan who collectively calls themselves Kanatal. The name Kanatal means ‘island’ in the Amis language and refers to the island of Taiwan – home to this small band of musical innovators. In Taiwan, different ethnic groups have come to live together and, at the same time, connect with the world through the ocean. And like their island home, these four talented indigenous musicians with their multi-ethnic backgrounds have come together to create explosive harmony that boldly crosses borders. They are all committed to creating engaging world music, and inspired to experiment with music from around the globe. The concept of Kanatal is not just limited to the society of an “island” but stretches beyond to encompass us all.
