Mekaal Hasan's Rivayat is a creative project that aims to showcase traditional Pakistani music and promote the voices of working-class musicians. Hasan, a music producer, and rock guitarist, brought together local talent from different parts of Pakistan, including Qawwali parties, village folk trios, and post-colonial brass bands, and recorded them in a studio in Lahore. The project focuses on capturing the acoustic sound of each artist without overdubs, and the resulting music is a blend of traditional Pakistani music with contemporary elements. Rivayat aims to weave the frayed threads of Pakistani musical tradition back into everyday life and give a voice to musicians who have been ignored or marginalized by the country's elites. The project was born out of Mekaal's desire to support working-class musicians who were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it represents an authentic and unfettered expression of Pakistani musical tradition. Through Rivayat, listeners can access hidden gems of Pakistani folk music and celebrate the country's rich and vibrant folklore.
